چکیده

The importance of R&D spillovers for productivity growth has been well-documented in the literature. While studies in the context of developed countries have extensively focused on sectoral linkages, research on North-South spillovers has been largely con...ned to the aggregate level. In this paper, we pursue the objective of ascertaining the contribution of international R&D spillovers to manufacturing performance in Indonesia, a fast growing developing country – at least until the “Asian crisis” of the late nineties at the sectoral level. A novel, longitudinal data-set has been developed, combining the OECD and Indonesian data sources. This allows us to take into consideration on the one hand, a relatively long period, characterised by intense policy regulations at the beginning, followed by the initiation of reforms towards the end of the period, and the importance of the speci...c pro...les of individual sectors in absorbing spillovers, on the other. Our results indicate a signi...cant contribution of international technology spillovers in the performance of manufacturing industry in Indonesia, with the notable importance of sectoral characteristics. Additionally, it has been observed that the imperfectly competitive sectoral structures favoured the transfer of rent spillovers. ¤We thank Bart Verspagen for his encouragement and useful suggestions, and Bart Los with whom we have had fruitful discussions and whose comments vastly enriched the measure of spillover adopted in the study. The help rendered by Eddy Szirmai, Marcel Timmer, Orietta Marsili and Alessandro Nuvolari, by way of comments and discussions is also gratefully acknowledged. Responsibility for all remaining errors rests solely with us.

Trade, Technology Transfer and Productivity Growth: The Neglected Role of Imports∗

We present evidence that importing is a driver of international technology transfer. Using a detailed panel of Indonesian manufacturers, our analysis shows that firms in industries supplying importintensive sectors have higher productivity than other firms. This finding suggests that linkages through vertical supply relationships are the channel through which import-driven technology transfer o...

Foreign Direct Investment, Exports & Aggregate Productivity

Empirical evidence confirms that trade exposure can shift resources towards the most efficient firms in an industry and induce substantial increases in aggregate productivity. Although recent studies document that much of world trade is controlled by multinational firms, few examine the effect of foreign direct investment decisions on resource allocation and aggregate productivity. Can Open Service Sector FDI Policy Enhance Manufacturing Productivity? Evidence from Indonesia

Just as Cinderella was the ignored sister with great potential, so service sector FDI may be the neglected sibling of trade policy. As trade and FDI regimes have become more liberalized in recent decades, tariff reductions and FDI in manufacturing have hogged the limelight, while FDI in services has often remained a wallflower. In fact, most restrictions on FDI flows today are in the service se...

The Effects of China's Growth in Manufacturing Sector in the U.S. Economy

T his paper investigates the gain of bilateral trade between China and U.S. in manufacturing sectors when both countries play a role in asymmetric (biased) growth of  international trade. Our model includes a special case of Biased Growth Theory in international trade. We collected labor productivity, export and import data by using classification of manufacturing industries, for U.S...
